Others can and do cause health problems ranging from simple discomfort to physical irritation, allergic sensitization and disease. Microbial body parts, reproductive parts (spores) and metabolic products (gasses and chemicals) all play a role in human well being, comfort, health and productivity. Some chemicals produced by fungi (known as mycotoxins) are extremely dangerous. All mycotoxins are known to be immunosuppressants with chronic exposure, and some are potent carcinogens

Molds – A PRIMER

Molds produce microscopic spores, reproductive bodies similar to seeds, that are very light and travel through the air. With the right conditions, these spores reproduce quickly (often within 24—48 hours) to create more colonies of mold.

Mold can grow on almost any surface and only requires dampness and a source of food to thrive. The nutrients required to sustain mold are plentiful and include dust, paper, ceiling tiles, cardboard, and wood.

It is impractical to completely eliminate all mold spores from our environment. Efforts on concentrating on eliminating food sources and inhibiting a spores’ ability to reproduce.


Many molds are capable of producing compounds which are toxic to humans. More than 200 mycotoxins have been identified from common mold. One of these, Aflatoxin B1 is one of the most potent carcinogens known. It has been positively linked to liver cancer and is a suspected cause of lung cancer.
