The first HEPA filters were developed in the 1940's by the USA Atomic Energy Commission for an efficient, effective way to filter radioactive particulate contaminants. They were needed as part of the Manhattan Project, which was the development of the atomic bomb. The first HEPA air filters were bulky compared to the HEPA air filters produced today. HEPA filter technology was declassified after World War 2 and that is when it was allowed for commercial and residential use.

With the capacity to collect dirt particles 1/300th the width of the human air, these filters have high resistance power and cannot be placed directly in heating or cooling systems not designed specifically for that purpose.
These filters are used as the primary filtration systems for electronic clean room assembly, isolation wards, surgical theaters, bioengineering units, pharmaceutical processing units, and other places where the maximum removal of sub-micron particulate is required. They are also used in portable units to supplement a building’s ventilation system by providing disinfected air.
Doctors suggest using HEPA filters in heating/cooling systems for the prevention and treatment of Tuberculosis. HEPA air cleaners, vacuum cleaners and air filters are essential by law to be used in all equipment for asbestos, lead, toxic chemicals, and mold abatement.
The major benefit of HEPA filtration is that it removes Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which are the gases that are released from household chemicals and synthetic materials.
