Atlanta Resident Complains of Mold Infestation in his Apartment

A resident of a Peoples’ Town Villas apartment in southeast Atlanta, Georgia, has complained that mold is making him sick.

Joseph Culler said he suffers from an ailment that weakens his immune system and mold infestation in his apartment is further worsening his condition. “I know about mold, it’s very lethal. It’ll kill you, especially with my kind of condition. I have seizures as well,” he said.

He said he showed the mold to the property managers but they have not yet done anything to clean it.

Asperguillas/Penicillium and Cladosporin are what type of mold?

Dear George,
Asperguillas/Penicillium and Cladosporin are what type of mold?

What if anything can they do to your health?

Signed,

Curious

Molds can cause a number of responses, more than we can answer here, including any degree of allergy.

If you’re talking about classification, molds are either Zygomycota, Deuteromycota and Ascomycota.

Aspergillus is a genus of around 200 molds.
Kingdom: Fungi
Phylum: Deuteromycota
Class: Eurotiomycetes
Order: Eurotiales
Family: Trichocomaceae
Genus: Aspergillus

Penicillium is a genus of ascomyceteous fungi Kingdom: Fungi
Phylum: Deuteromycota
Class: Eurotiomycetes
Order: Eurotiales
Family: Trichocomaceae
Genus: Penicillium

Cladosporium is a genus of fungi:
Kingdom: Fungi
Division: Deuteromycota
Order: Moniliales
Family: Dematiaceae
Genus: Cladosporium

Cladosporium are likely to cause skin and nail infection, sinusitis and/or pulmonary infections which can turn to pneumonia.
Aspergillus species cause Aspergillosis ( fever, cough, chest pain or breathlessnes) Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis or ABPA,
Acute invasive aspergillosi, and disseminated invasive aspergillosis. Aflatoxins are produced by Aspergillus species; Aflatoxin B1 is a known carcinogen.
Some strains of Penicillium are capable of producing harmful secondary metabolites: alkaloids and other mycotoxins. Ochratoxin A is produced by Penicillium verrucosum causes kidney damage.

Molds create mycotoxins ( toxin produced by an organism of the fungus kingdom)

Toxins are poisons, unrelated to allergy.

What are all the different molds?

Dear George,
what are all the different molds and what health problems do they cause?

Signed,

Dear Curious,

Byebye Mold is good, really good at mold inspections–

But you should know that doctors, scientists and lawyers have been fighting over the answer to your question for years. Even when doctors and scientists find definitive links, determining causation in a way that satisfies the courts is difficult, if not impossible. It’s like the joke:
Question: “If you had a cookie, will rain tomorrow?”
Answer: “Elephants.”

They really don’t have much of a connection.

There are thousands of types of mold, far more than we can do justice to in a small paragraph here. But we do host a mold glossary, which you can explore here: http://byebyemold.com/glossary.php

Heath effects of moldy environments vary because most reactions are allergic in nature, even though some molds produces poisonous mycotoxins.

Because they’re toxins, most mycotoxins have very specific documented responses, though how people respond may vary in degree, with the infirm, infants, and the elderly having the most severe response.

We can generalize here and say mold triggers allergic reactions ranging from wheezing, sneezing, shortness of breath, skin rashes, upper respiratory irritation, coughing, eye irritation, headaches, and lethargy. However mold exposure has not been well researched or documented, and all symptoms are not limited to those listed here.
