Another Lawsuit Blames Linens at UPMC for Mold-Related Death

On April 20th, a lawsuit was filed against the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Shadyside hospital, Pennsylvania, blaming linens for mold-related death of a patient in October 2015.

According to the lawsuit, leukemia patient Katherine Landman died due to a mold infection that she allegedly caught through linens provided by Paris Cleaners. The lawsuit further says that Landman’s death was the 7th at a UPMC hospital apparently caused by the linens.

Other six deaths were reported at UPMC Montefiore and Presbyterian hospitals.

Lawyer Alleges Mold at Pittsburgh Hospital Led to Patient’s Death

The family of a kidney transplant patient who died last week is planning to file a lawsuit against University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).

Daniel Krieg, 56, of St. Marys, underwent a kidney transplant last year at UPMC. In March this year, he suffered from pneumonia and had to go back to the hospital where he was put in a specially-ventilated “negative pressure room.”

According to his attorney, Krieg died after he contracted a fungal infection due to time spent in the ventilated room.

However, the hospital administration said in a statement, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Mr. Krieg. His death was not directly related to the fungal infection, but rather can be attributed to pneumonia.”

$135 Million in Settlement to Family of Hospital’s Deceased Mold Victim

Tracy Fischer died in October 2014 after contracting a fungal infection at UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh. After staying in the same room in the hospital’s cardiothoracic intensive care unit as two other patients who later died with fungal infections, Tracy Fischer also died.

The Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said a specially ventilated room in the hospital’s cardiothoracic intensive care unit was likely to have been the source of the mold. In the autopsy report, Dr. Jeffrey Nine, a UPMC pathologist wrote “To the best of my knowledge, this 47-year-old woman died of angioinvasive mucormycosis as a complication of post-transplant immunosuppression following orthotopic heart transplantation.”

After the mold outbreak at the hospital, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) suspended its transplant program for less than a week.

Hospital Surgical Theatre Closed in the Bahamas Due to Mold Infestation

Opposition Leader Dr. Hubert Minnis said last week that a surgical theatre of the labour ward of Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), located in Centreville, Nassau, Bahamas, has been shut down due to mold infestation.

He said that the theatre was closed after the nurses and other staff complained about having respiratory problems due to mold infestation.

Dr. Minnis emphasized that the government should take steps to open the newly constructed Critical Care Block. “The new (Critical Care Block) has the facility for new theatres… All the government has to do is move the patients to the new block and utilise the facilities that we have built. Instead they choose to leave them there in a mold-infested area knowing that the personnel are plagued with respiratory problems.”
