Over 100 LAPD Officers File Claims Over Mold, Other Unhealthy Conditions at Southeast Community Police Station

Over 100 Los Angeles Police Department officers have filed worker compensation claims reporting mold and other unhealthy conditions at the Southeast Community Police Station.

The officers alleged that the Police Station’s heating and air conditioning system vents are covered with black mold and bird feathers. They claimed that these unhealthy conditions are causing respiratory issues including asthma and sinus infections.

The Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL) is demanding that the city administration takes immediate action to mitigate this problem.

LAPD spokesman Josh Rubenstein said in a written statement, “While we understand the mold spore levels do not pose a serious health risk, we are working with the Los Angeles General Services Department to remove it from the building… It is our priority to ensure that LAPD employees and the community feel safe in our stations.”

Franklin County Health Department Faces Mold Issue

The Franklin County Health Department building in Columbus, Ohio, was temporarily shut down on September 2, due to mold issues.

According to Franklin County manager Angela Harris, the building was briefly vacated to seal off mold-infested areas for treatment. The staff was requested to vacate the building and customer services were made limited.

Harris said the department was informed about the issue on August 21 and the test reports came out within 4 days. “We have had employees complain about sinus and allergy problems since the report came out… Perhaps 20 or more have expressed that they have had, in some point in time, an allergy or sinus problems,” she said.

California Board of Equalization Faces $50M Claim Over Mold-related Illness

The California Board of Equalization (BOE) is facing a new claim filed by their employees, who say that the mold at the BOE headquarters has been causing them respiratory problems, skin rashes and other mold-related illness.

The claim is not the first one; a previous lawsuit regarding mold-related illness in BOE employees involved 31 plaintiffs and was resolved back in 2012.

This new claim was brought by an associate tax auditor with BOE, Racquel Raichart, on behalf of herself and the other employees. Attorney Anthony Perez, who filed the claim with the state of California on July 2, has accused the BOE management of misleading the employees by telling them that the building was mold free. “People continue to show problems of mold exposure. You have management stating to employees that the building is safe, and that remediation has been successful. That is untrue,” said Perez.

The claim seeks at least $50 million for the medical care and treatment of the employees. Perez said that in the next few months, a lawsuit will be filed Sacramento Superior Court.
