Mold Attacks Native American reservation

Mold has infested and sickened public housing units at the Lac Courte Oreille Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Reservation. Now the question is posed if the tribe has mishandled $1 million in taxpayer money. A grant was awarded, but only a handful of houses have been repaired, and the cost to complete the repairs has grown substantially. A hundred members of the Lac Courte Oreille Band have requested a forensic audit of tribal accounts.

Another Mold Lawsuit

gavel
Mold lawsuits strike again: This time, Akeidra Massey and Joseph Jacks filed suit against Willwoods Community, Willwoods Community Management Inc. and their insurer in the 24th Judicial District Court on March 26.

The attorney defending Akeidra Massey and Joseph Jacks is J. Nelson Mauyer III of New Orleans.

These tenants of the Courtyard Apartments were exposed to high levels of mold. Repairs not made after water intrusion during Hurricane Isaac may have been the cause.

Landlords failed to maintain the premises in a reasonable and safe condition, leading to illness, leading to severe injuries, leading to the lawsuit.

Louisiana’s humidity and water issues frequently lead to mold-related pain, suffering, disability and economic loss.

Does Mold Spread?

Dear George,

CAN BLACK MOLD ON THE PATIO CEILING FALL ON MY BED CLOTHES AND FURNITURE IF I HAD MY SLIDING GLASS DOOR OPEN.

CAN IT BE BLOWN ON TO EVERYTHING IN THE HOUSE BY THE WIND ARE MUST IT BE TOUCHED TO CONTAMINATE MY THINGS.

The quality of outdoor air is the baseline for your house. In other words, if your house were to be tested for mold, one indicator of a problem would be if you had a higher concentration of spores inside than outside. So, generally speaking, fresh air is a GOOD thing.

BUT there are always special circumstances. If you are located in a massive source of outdoor mold like in a humid location (Florida, Louisiana, etc…) after a flood or tornado, the outdoor mold concentration might be at a higher than normal level, that outdoor air might not be to healthy. Or if you had some excellent air filtration system installed because you had a household immunity-compromised or asthmatics, it would be reasonable to expect your normal indoor spore concentration to fall below outdoor levels.

Your special situation of having mold growth at an air entry point could theoretically be the opposite of a mold filter; it is conceivable that, as you suggest, air flowing past that mold could increase the spore content of inbound air. It would probably be a good idea to give the area a sound professional cleaning prior to opening up those doors. And, especially if you’re going to remediate, do it with those doors shut. When you start messing with mold-riddled areas, you’re going to stir things up, and you don’t want any stirred-up mold detritus to find its way into your living area to take root.

Make sure you also address the moisture issue. If there is moisture trapped in your patio, you need to deal with it–whether it is a leak in need of repair, or trapped humidity in need of ventilation. Once that moisture is gone, and the mold is gone, you should be able to enjoy some fresh air.

Asperguillas/Penicillium and Cladosporin are what type of mold?

Dear George,
Asperguillas/Penicillium and Cladosporin are what type of mold?

What if anything can they do to your health?

Signed,

Curious

Molds can cause a number of responses, more than we can answer here, including any degree of allergy.

If you’re talking about classification, molds are either Zygomycota, Deuteromycota and Ascomycota.

Aspergillus is a genus of around 200 molds.
Kingdom: Fungi
Phylum: Deuteromycota
Class: Eurotiomycetes
Order: Eurotiales
Family: Trichocomaceae
Genus: Aspergillus

Penicillium is a genus of ascomyceteous fungi Kingdom: Fungi
Phylum: Deuteromycota
Class: Eurotiomycetes
Order: Eurotiales
Family: Trichocomaceae
Genus: Penicillium

Cladosporium is a genus of fungi:
Kingdom: Fungi
Division: Deuteromycota
Order: Moniliales
Family: Dematiaceae
Genus: Cladosporium

Cladosporium are likely to cause skin and nail infection, sinusitis and/or pulmonary infections which can turn to pneumonia.
Aspergillus species cause Aspergillosis ( fever, cough, chest pain or breathlessnes) Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis or ABPA,
Acute invasive aspergillosi, and disseminated invasive aspergillosis. Aflatoxins are produced by Aspergillus species; Aflatoxin B1 is a known carcinogen.
Some strains of Penicillium are capable of producing harmful secondary metabolites: alkaloids and other mycotoxins. Ochratoxin A is produced by Penicillium verrucosum causes kidney damage.

Molds create mycotoxins ( toxin produced by an organism of the fungus kingdom)

Toxins are poisons, unrelated to allergy.

I smell mold in my remodeled house

Dear George,

Moved into remodeled house. Water has been a problem during the remodeling. One room smell musty after heavy rains, however I do not see any mold. Can you suggest the best way to approach this?

If you smell mold, it is likely there IS mold.

The best thing to do is to call a company like ByeByeMold and have them do an assessment.

They have the tools to detect water behind the wallboard, so that existing mold can be pinpointed with the least possible intrusion. Once the extent of the damage has been located and determined, you can move on from there, either with the construction company’s warranty, a new construction company, legal action, etc, whatever the case warrants.

Can you detect if there is black mold present behind the walls?

Dear George,

Is there a way to have a house inspected to detect if there is black mold present possibley in the inside walls?

Growing Mold

Yes. If the mold assessor is like Byebye Mold, they use thermal imaging systems as well as devices which detect gases. Because moisture intrusion and water leaks project a uniquely identifiable range of thermal capacitance, our thermal imaging can pinpoint immediate non-invasive high-resolution evidence of potential moisture and heat conditions to help locate sources of water intrusion.

We also utilize a device that allows us to take a non-invasive wall cavity air sample. The use of the latest in available technologies can help identify what lies inside walls and crawlspaces.

Dear George, will spray kill the mold?

Tags :

Category : Remediation

Dear George,
I had a water leak for 2 1/2 months. There was mold on wood work, dry wall. They sprayed KILZ on the drywall and replace the trim. They tell me that will kill the mold. Is this true? This water leak was from my air conditioner should ducts be checked?

It is hard to make a perfect analysis without actually seeing the property. I would think that the first thing to do is to repair any and all leaks, completely dry and clean any areas where water accumulated or was trapped; REMOVE damaged construction materials and then do the final repairs. If drywall is moldy, I would generally say the damaged area needs to be replaced–mostly because mold does not grow only on the surface of materials, but grows INTO the drywall structure itself. Unless this is referring to some other product, Kilz is simply a primer with really good coverage, but its best use would be to cover clean, new drywall as a preventative rather than a cover-up.

I would agree also, that yes, your ducts should be checked–and anywhere else the water could have permeated.
