Families Complain of Mold at Senior Citizen Center in Quebec, Canada

Families of the residents of a senior citizen center in Sorel-Tracy, Quebec, Canada, have alleged that the building is infested with mold and mushrooms.

An anonymous person, claiming to be the daughter of one of the residents at Marquis De Tracy, said, “There are mushrooms in the basement, it’s terrible. There is one which is as big as the fist. There is water on the floors, in the corners especially, and on the walls you can see black spots. And I don’t know in there, but I have the impression that if you defeated the wall, if there are any that come out through the skirting boards, surely that back it is full.”

The center houses approximately 75 senior citizens.

The facility manager Bernard Beauchemin said the management is working to resolve the water infiltration problem in the building.

Experts Recommend Berries with Mold Growth Should be Avoided

moldyberry
Have you ever seen white coloured mold grown on the blueberries you bring from supermarkets?

According to health experts, this white mold is usually a species from trichoderma genus. This type of mold is not generally dangerous for human health however, it can trigger an allergic reaction in some people.

The experts recommend that the blueberries which have mold grown over them should be avoided as much as possible because the mold growth indicates that the fruit is old, has lost some of its nutrition and does not taste very good.

Mold Types and Results

Category : Assessment , Mold types

Dear George,

Asperguillas/Penicillium and Cladosporin are what type of mold. What if anything can they do to your health?

Signed,
Penicillium Nuts

Dear Nuts,

Molds can cause a number of responses, more than we can answer here, including any degree of allergy.

If you’re talking about classification, molds are either Zygomycota, Deuteromycota and Ascomycota.

Aspergillus is a genus of around 200 molds.
Kingdom: Fungi
Phylum: Deuteromycota
Class: Eurotiomycetes
Order: Eurotiales
Family: Trichocomaceae
Genus: Aspergillus

Penicillium is a genus of ascomyceteous fungi Kingdom: Fungi
Phylum: Deuteromycota
Class: Eurotiomycetes
Order: Eurotiales
Family: Trichocomaceae
Genus: Penicillium

Cladosporium is a genus of fungi:
Kingdom: Fungi
Division: Deuteromycota
Order: Moniliales
Family: Dematiaceae
Genus: Cladosporium

Cladosporium are likely to cause skin and nail infection, sinusitis and/or pulmonary infections which can turn to pneumonia.
Aspergillus species cause Aspergillosis ( fever, cough, chest pain or breathlessnes) Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis or ABPA,
Acute invasive aspergillosi, and disseminated invasive aspergillosis. Aflatoxins are produced by Aspergillus species; Aflatoxin B1 is a known carcinogen.
Some strains of Penicillium are capable of producing harmful secondary metabolites: alkaloids and other mycotoxins. Ochratoxin A is produced by Penicillium verrucosum causes kidney damage.

Molds create mycotoxins ( toxin produced by an organism of the fungus kingdom) Mycotoxins are the poisons that make everyone sick. In addition, people become allergic to mold based on individual sensitivities and the extent of exposure.

Types of Mold-see glossary

Category : Mold types , Science

what are all the different molds and what health problems do they cause?

There are thousands of types of mold, far more than we can do justice to in a small paragraph here. But we do host a mold glossary, which you can explore here: http://byebyemold.com/glossary.php

Heath effects of moldy environments vary because most reactions are allergic in nature, even though some molds produces poisonous mycotoxins. We can generalize here and say mold triggers allergic reactions ranging from wheezing, sneezing, shortness of breath, skin rashes, upper respiratory irritation, coughing, eye irritation, headaches, and lethargy. However mold exposure has no

Green and Black

Category : Mold types

Dear George,

If there is mold on the outside of the wall then is it growing on the inside? The mold color is kind of black and green and of course has grown where there has been moisture. I was wondering if you had and idea what type of mold it was?

Signed,
Bicolor Mold

This depends on the surface. The more porous the wall, the more moisture inside, the greater the mold growth inside the wall. The less porous, the more dry, the less growth will be inside the wall. You may be looking at mold that started on the surface and grew inward–or you may be looking at the tip of the iceberg. I have a pretty good idea what it is but I hate to generalize without seeing it under a microscope. You can’t believe how many black and green molds there are. It’s kind of like asking what type of car you drive based on the colors green and black. The first thing most experts would say if your wall surface is wet gypsum material or wallpaper would be Stachybotrys chartarum, commonly called toxic black mold. Under “optimum” conditions, it produces trichothecene mycotoxins and satratoxins.

There are literally thousands of known types of mold. It would be precipitous to say the mold is a certain type based simply on the color. Take a look here to start…:

http://byebyemold.com/glossary.php

What is more significant is that most types of mold secrete hydrolytic enzymes whose whole purpose is to degrade the starch and cellulose in your wall so that the mold can digest it. In nature, the mycotoxins that the mold puts out are there to discourage competition for the food source (in this case, your wall.) In your home or anywhere for that matter, the mycotoxins provide the toxic element that make you sick; and the spores cause allergic reactions of varying degrees.
